As I was reading your article on deep breathing and setting multiple achievable goals during a long climb I remembered a trick that works for me and that is to pace yourself by counting 100 steps then stop for a count of 10 then repeat. Govern yourself to stop for no more than a count of 10. If you get more tired or the trail gets steeper I will reduce the amount of steps but keep the stop to no more than a slow count of 10. I've helped a few people up from the Grand Canyon with that technique.
